The meeting is over, the honeymoon is dead, and the lame duck just bit back.I'm Jessi Mercury, and you're listening to Stoop Politics. This week, we're done talking about that confusing Trump meeting from two weeks ago. Why?Because Eric Adams just left a geopolitical landmine on the mayor-elect's desk.Plus, the city council goes to war to save your rent vouchers. And we find out the NYPD might be leaking secrets to ICE.If it's happening in the five boroughs, we're spilling it right here.Let's get into it.First up, we have the parting gift. Now, we all knew that Eric Adams wasn't going to leave quietly, but yesterday, he went absolutelynuclear. On Wednesday, Adams signed an executive order barring city agencies from cooperating withthe Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions, that's the BDS, movement against Israel. Now, why does this matter at this moment?Because Zoran Mamdani, who takes office in less than a month, is a vocal supporter ofthe BDS movement. He campaigned on reviewing the city's investments in foreign bonds.Adams knows this.By signing this order now, he's forcing Mamdani to make a choice on day one, either keep Adams'sorder and anger his socialist base, or repeal it and immediately start a war with the Jewishcaucus and moderate Democrats. It's a political booby trap, pure and simple.Adams is trying to make sure that Mamdani's first week is spent fighting culture warsinstead of fixing the subways. Now, while Adams was busy signing orders, the city council was busy crushing them.Today, the council voted to override the mayor's vetoes on the city FEPs bills. This is a big deal for anyone struggling with rent.Adams tried to block legislation that stops rent hikes for people using housing vouchers, claiming it was too expensive. The council, led by speaker Adrian Adams, no relation, just said, we don't care. They slammed the override button. It's a massive flex. The council is signaling that they are running the show during this transition. And keep an ear to the ground on the rent guidelines board.Rumor has it that Adams is trying to appoint new landlord-friendly members before he leavesto block Mamdani's promised rent freeze next year. The council is watching that like a hawk. Finally, a story that should make you nervous. The Department of Investigation just dropped a report yesterday revealing gaps in how theNYPD follows the city's sanctuary laws.New York is supposed to be a sanctuary city, meaning local cops don't do ICE's job.But this report found instances where officers were sharing information with federal immigrationauthorities. With Trump back in the White House and threatening mass deportations, this gap is a canyon.Mamdani has promised to Trump-proof the city, but this report shows the call is coming frominside the house. If the NYPD is freelancing with ICE behind the mayor's back, Mamdani's sanctuary mightjust be a slogan. So Adams is setting traps, the council is seizing power, and the cops are going rogue.Oh, and apparently Mamdani made the list of the most mispronounced words of 2025.Get it right, people. It's Mam-da-ni.You're going to be saying it a lot for the next four years.Join me next week on Stoop Politics. We'll see if Mam-da-ni takes the bait on the BDS order.I'm Jessi Mercury.Stay warm and watch your step.
